COMMENT
Subtitled "The First Decade : Complete Live TV 1980-1988", but we shan't get into semantics regarding 10 years being a decade (this release only covers 8 years), nor the fact that the opening American Bandstand performances are lip-synched and thus NOT live. What sets this first volume apart from the many other releases of this kind (including the rest in this Sound & Vision series) is the award acceptance speeches, etc have not been included here - which makes the release flow far more smoothly. The release begins with a decent quality version of the American Bandstand broadcast introduced by Dick Clark. This is evidently a re-broadcast from the mid/late 1990's as it includes a commentary intro from Dick Clark where he refers to Prince as "The Artist Formerly Known As". The performances are lip-synched to the released versions which is of zero interest and rather pointless on an audio disc, however it also includes the non-interview-interview. This is followed by Prince's first Saturday Night Live appearance with 'Partyup' which again is decent, if a little grainy. The trio of live performance promos follows including the complete 13 minute 'Baby I'm A Star'. The quality of the American Music Awards performance of 'Purple Rain' is the first low point of the release and there is a distracting loud humming throughout, and the audio is rather thin and slightly piercing - not the best source recording I've heard. Onwards and upwards, we come to the unedited lengthy 10 minute version of 'America' which is slightly wavy during the beginning, but settles down nicely and is of a pretty high quality. The only real disappointment of this release comes with the MTV Video Music Awards which is appallingly bad. 'Sign O' The Times' itself has a few slight glitches, but in comparison to the following 'Play In The Sunshine' they are minor. 'Play In The Sunshine' is tinny, thin, grating, piercing and very, very poor quality - I'm surprised this ever made it past Sabotage's quality control and it has to be one of the worst source recordings I have ever heard. Disc 2 is a CD-Rom and features the professionally filmed (in)famous Benefit Show for the Minnesota Dance Theatre at First Avenue and I'm puzzled as to why it was included on this release as it was never broadcast, and cannot be classed as "TV material". The quality is average at best, and since this release it has been surpassed greatly which makes this particular version obsolete. Overall this is not a great start to Sabotage's "Sound & Vision" series, but the releases do get better and this is the only volume with some serious flaws in the source recordings. The horrendously flawed 'Play In The Sunshine' is pretty much unforgiveable, however look past that (and the pretty woeful quality of the First Avenue 83 CD-Rom) and it's not a bad release for it's time...I guess.

COMMENT
This is actually one of Sabotage's better early releases, and certainly one of the nicest covering the Emancipation era. The release begins off with the 'Freedom Concert' from Paisley Park. The show itself is hardly the most awe-inspiring performance Prince has ever given, but the show does include a rather unique and very enjoyable version of 'Joy In Repetition'. The other tracks performed at the show went on to become regulars on the US 1997 tours, and the versions performed are identical, although slightly abridged. Next we have the version of '2morrow' which went on to appear on the official release of the 'Crystal Ball' album. I believe this is the earliest broadcast of the song (hence it's inclusion here), however it is identical to the released version. The complete Oprah Winfrey broadcast takes up the majority of this disc, and whilst it is an intriguing, farcical item to watch, as with most other TV interviews it doesn't really lend itself to an audio only release like this one. Second to last is the Emancipation outtake 'Sarah' which is available on any of the larger outtake sets, but it is perfectly understandable why it has been included here. The final track on this set is 2m 30 seconds from the press conference given by Prince after the 'Freedom Concert' at Paisley Park. The sound quality is extremely poor and at times it is very hard to make out the questions being asked to Prince, and his reply. That said it is still a fascinating, rather rare addition. The accompanying artwork and booklet of an extremely high standard with the usual stunning artwork and pictures - although no information of any kind. Overall this is one of Sabotage's better releases, and certainly one of the best of any label concerning the rather bland Emancipation era.

COMMENT
This release comes with the description of being 'The Lost Kim Basinger Album' and all tracks listed are credited to Prince on the sleeve. I am highly sceptical of Prince's involvement in any of the opening 9 songs. Prince undoubtedly worked on tracks with Kim Basinger when they were dating, however the bland, uninteresting songs here are surely NOT the results of their recording time together. The songs are dated, very unprofessional and lack any hooks. The addition of 3 remixes of Soul Psychodelicide make this release a little more interesting and enjoyable - however even they cannot rescue this terrible release.

COMMENT
The second volume of the Sound & Vision series and a vastly superior release to the first in terms of the quality of the sources used. Unfortunately (or fortunately if you are a completist) the acceptance speeches have been left intact, and I find it spoils the flow of the musical performances, although it's completely understandable why they are on here. Again, I take issue with this release being subtitled "The Second Decade" as it covers the period 1989-1996 which is not a decade. Quality-wise, there are only a few glitches worth me pointing out. Both the acceptance speeches from American Music Awards (1990) and the Soul Train Music Awards (1992) suffer from horrendous crowd noise and at times it's impossible to hear Prince - thankfully his speech is short and sweet and we don't suffer too long. Added to this there appears to be a tape chew on the video recording used by Sabotage to source the Arsenio Hall 1991 recording version of 'Purple Rain' - it lasts barely a second, but it's noticeable. The outro on 'The Sacrifice Of Victor' from The Ryde Dyvine 1992 broadcast suffers from some serious crackling which lasts approx 5 seconds and is shockingly bad - nobody picked up on this before it was released? The editing between tracks also leaves a little to be desired and could be smoother instead of the "jump" which affects the way one performance flows into the next. Disc 2 is slightly more focused as the time frame consists of 1993-1996. The quality is overall very impressive, but yet again the digital crackling is back, this time for the closing 5 seconds of 'Billy Jack Bitch' from The Sunday Show - a real annoyance and completely ruining it. The source used for the VH1 Honors broadcast is the censored version meaning the word "bitch" has been edited out, and is a slight pity. The remainder is very enjoyable, but there are one too many award acceptance speeches for my liking.

COMMENT
A phenomenal release, and perhaps the best document of an Act II show there is. This is the only circulating soundboard of an Act II concert, which itself makes this release great. The addition of the remaining bonus material just makes this even more appealing. The Lüneburg concert is a basic, but enjoyable show. Unusually there is no 'Little Red Corvette' played, hence the piano segment is very short. The encore includes a very bassy 'Pope', and closes with 'Peach', which include some added lyrics, including the line "I got a boner as big as a drum stick Michael used to play in 9th grade". The Sheffield tracks are from the cancelled radio broadcast of the show on Capitol FM, and have since become available in more complete form on Sabotage's "Starlight Lounge"
. The Radio 1 concert broadcast again is a nice addition to the set, although they are already heavily circulating. The closing tracks from the Munich Act II aftershow are a strange bonus. They are taken from the MTV broadcast, and are each barely 45 seconds long - something of a tease. I am aware that some versions of this release come with the Vienna 25th August 1993 Act II show, whilst others have the Wegberg 28th August 1993 Act II show. The packaging is very cool, however there is a tracklisting mistake on the back cover - no biggie. Overall though, an (as yet) unequalled release of 1993 soundboard/broadcast footage.

COMMENT
This Nude concert was broadcast on Spanish radio, and is where this particular release is sourced from. During the initial broadcast the Spanish DJ proceeded to talk between songs, and Sabotage have attempted to edit this out. They have done a very good job, however it is noticeable that they have used an audience recording to fill in some gaps, and in other parts have tried to make the join as smooth as possible. It slightly jars with the flow of the show, but short of leaving in the commentary there really is nothing they could have done. The show itself is a great example of a Nude tour concert, and includes some less commonly performed tracks including a snippet from 'An Honest Man' during the piano medley, a full blown version of 'When Doves Cry', and the closing jam based loosely around 'We Can Funk'. The addition of the Nude tour rehearsal, whilst being welcome, is a strange choice. The running order is out of synch with the order in which the songs were rehearsed, and it is available in more complete form on Thunderball's 'Nudity' release. The packaging is, as one would expect, stunning. The booklet is missing any form of info on the show, in fact there is barely a word of text written in it - just pretty pictures. The set also comes with a fold-out poster containing the Little Mermaid tale by Hans Christian Andersen - a strange choice. Unfortunately the track-listing on the back is incorrect and contains many errors, which is rather unusual and sloppy for a Sabotage release. Overall this is a fairly average release by Sabotage. They have tried their best to sort out the problems created by the broadcast, and have done an impressive enough job.

COMMENT
As with a fair number of outtake sets from the mid 90's, this seems rather out of place now. The majority of the material has since either been officially released, or is available on other releases. That said this is still a decent collection of material. The first disc contains studio material from 1993 - 1996 with consistently excellent sound quality. Disc 2 is far more interesting and all are sourced from circulating video recordings. The only slight let-down is that the version of VH1's Love4OneAnother broadcast is slightly gritty, and has been censored. There are far better sets circulating, however this is a nice release overall. It should be noted this is a completely different and updated release to the previous Sabotage "Past, Presente, ¬ Future " release.

COMMENT
This is the first half of the Paisley Park concert, the second half can be found on Paisley Park Extravaganza Part 2.
The release begins with an interview by the New Power Generation from July 1995 to promote the "Exodus" album. Prince (or Tora Tora) is not present, however it is a fairly interesting 8 minute long interview. Up next is a version of 'Mad' played by a DJ and recorded by a crowd member. I'm not entirely convinced it has been recorded at Paisley Park prior to the show starting for several reasons. Firstly the quality of the recording is vastly inferior to the quality of the show recording. Secondly the DJ makes reference to "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince is in town and will be playing in 20 minutes" - I doubt the announcement would be required before he hit the stage at Paisley Park. The version played is phenomenal and far superior to the circulating version. And so to the Paisley Park show itself. The quality of the recording is excellent, however it is a little bassy and Prince appears to be having problems with his microphone throughout the first half of the show. The real problem with the recording are a number of audience members standing close to the person recording. They are audible throughout and insist on either shouting inane comments to Prince throughout, or banging on their tambourine. They do get in the way on occasion, but on the whole they are pretty easily overlooked. The first half of the show is rather typical of many from the period. There are a few lyrics from 'The Good Life (Big City Remix') added to 'Brick House', and Prince is constantly addressing the crowd with various bizarre statements, such as "Are men from Mars, are women from Venus? Would you feel like a star if I showed you my....house". Comes as part of Sabotage's 3cd set packaged in a cardboard wrap-around sleeve.

COMMENT
The first half of this disc contains the second half of the Paisley Park 18th June show (the first half can be found on Paisley Park Extravaganza Part 1. The quality is exactly the same as the previous half of the show, and it unfortunately suffers from the same problems with certain audience members as the first half does. This portion of the show kicks off with a great version of 'Big Fun', and the show also appears to have the same microphone problems as the first half with Prince constantly shouting at the sound engineers to balance the levels out correctly. There is a track listed on here as 'Volkswagen Blues' which appears rather puzzling at first. It is listed on various on-line sites, along with Upton's The Vault book as being an unreleased track, but this is completely incorrect. 'Volkswagen Blues' is nothing more than a seemingly improvised version of BB King's "How Blue Can You Get" with Prince rearranging the lyrics to suit his own style - certainly not worthy of being classed as an unreleased track. The show closes with a very lengthy version of the 'Santana Medley'. The second half of the disc is made up of the unreleased NPG 1995 project 'New Power Madhouse'. As with the other discs in this 3cd set, this comes with it's own jewel case and accompanying artwork - intended to be kept with the others in a cardboard warp-around sleeve. COMMENT
The final instalment of Sabotage's fantastic Paisley Park 2cd set. This particular disc differs from the others as the show featured is the 18th September 1995 show played after a Gold Experience listening party was held. The show is far less structured than many from the same period with far more emphasis on loose jamming and various crowd chants. That said there is a stunning very guitar heavy version of 'The Cross' played. Tracks #7-10 are basically a long jam with various crowd call-and-chants centred around 'Rock & Roll Is Alive'. Next up is the short 15 minute set played after the filming of various video's for the Gold Experience and the Love 4 One Another broadcast on 10th October 1995 (listed as 7th October 1995 on the reverse sleeve). The set includes a version of 'Love...Thy Will Be Done' which Prince dedicates to Time Warner for releasing the Gold Experience album. The final bonus track is the radio broadcast of 'Rock & Roll Is Alive' by the Minneapolis DJ Tony Fly. The sound quality throughout is consistently excellent, however the 10th October 1995 recording is rather heavy with a fair amount of audience noise. On it's own this is a great release, but combined with the other 2 discs from this 3cd set, it becomes a fantastic addition to an already quality filled release. A stunning early release from Sabotage.

COMMENT
Two fascinating Lovesexy aftershows. The sound quality on both, while being very good, has a fair amount of tape hiss and the Grosse Freiheit recording is incomplete and has a number of drop-outs and the occasional fade. Unfortunately the Camden Palace recording is also incomplete and Sabotage have inserted parts from the circulating video of the show (Fargnoli's footage from the BBC Omnibus Documentary) which makes the actual Camden Palace recording sound rather poor in comparison - not one of Sabotage's better idea's IMO. The Freiheit show features a number of rare and exclusive moments. The piano medley from the Lovesexy Tour is performed, albeit slightly differently from the main show's performance. 'People Without' is again performed, however this time it is more an instrumental jam than the Het Paard van Troje improvised version. Taylor Dane guests onstage for 'Still Would Stand All Time' and proceeds to attempt to scream Boni off the stage. 'God Is Alive' features a short speech by Prince (called Camille's Story on the booklet) and explains his reasoning for pulling the Black Album (from Camille's perspective). The Camden Palace show again is incomplete and is a rather messy affair. The closing 'Miss You' has been taken from the BBC Omnibus documentary, however it lasts barely 20 seconds before it fades out and it's inclusion is rather baffling and pointless. The remainder of the show is an excellent aftershow from the 88 period and includes a lengthy up-beat groove on 'Strange Relationship' with some guitar work from 'Rave', and Mica Paris guesting on 'Just My Imagination'. Overall this is not Sabotage's best effort. The editing and inclusion of some parts is rather strange, however as it is their first releases, and they have gone on to bigger and better releases - then it's excusable. That said, I actually really enjoy the Grosse Freiheit aftershow, so purely for it's inclusion this release gets the thumbs up from me.
